The Carry-On Edit Spain Countdown: 9–8 Days Out — Lock It In, Lighten It Up

At this point in the countdown, the excitement is very real—but so is the potential for overpacking, overplanning, and second-guessing everything. Days 9 and 8 before a big international trip are where the magic happens if you use them right: you’re not starting from scratch anymore, you’re refining.

This is the edit phase.

✈️ What I’m Doing 9–8 Days Before Spain

1. Finalizing the Itinerary (But Leaving Room to Breathe)
I’m going back through each stop—Seville, Marbella, Madrid—and tightening the plan just enough. Reservations are confirmed, tickets are downloaded, and I’m noting anything time-sensitive (Alcázar, Alhambra, flamenco night).

But I’m also intentionally leaving space. Not every lunch needs a reservation. Not every afternoon needs a plan. Spain is a wander-and-discover kind of place, and I’m building that in on purpose.

2. Locking in Transportation Details
This is the window to make sure all the “in-between” pieces are handled:

  • Train tickets downloaded (Madrid → Seville)
  • Car rental details confirmed for Marbella portion
  • Airport transfers roughly planned (not overcomplicated—just aware of options)

Nothing ruins a travel day like scrambling for logistics you could’ve handled ahead of time.

3. Outfit Reality Check (The Most Important Step)
This is where I try everything on. Not just “does it fit,” but:

  • Does this actually feel comfortable?
  • Would I walk 10,000+ steps in this?
  • Does it mix and match with at least 2–3 other pieces?

If it doesn’t pass that test—it doesn’t go.
Spain is not the place for “maybe outfits.”

I’m editing down to pieces I know I’ll wear:

  • Black racerback tanks (easy, breathable, repeatable)
  • Lightweight dresses (day-to-night)
  • Comfortable but elevated sandals + sneakers
  • A layering piece for cooler nights (my tissue cardigan)

4. Shoes: Be Ruthless
Shoes are always the problem. This time, I’m sticking to:

  • Sneakers (travel + heavy walking days)
  • Neutral sandals (everyday)
  • Espadrille wedges (dinner / dressier moments)

If a shoe doesn’t go with multiple outfits, it’s out.

5. Accessories That Actually Earn Their Spot
I’m narrowing down bags to:

  • Sherpani crossbody (daily exploring)
  • Straw tote (beach / daytime carryall)
  • Dinner clutch (for evenings out)

That’s it. No extras “just in case.”

6. Beauty + Travel Size Edits
I’m starting to pull travel sizes and test what actually fits into my toiletry bag. If it doesn’t fit easily, it’s getting swapped or downsized.

This is also when I:

  • Refill minis
  • Order anything missing (while there’s still time)
  • Simplify my routine (vacation skin > 12-step routine)

7. Start a Packing Zone (But Don’t Pack Yet)
Instead of panic-packing later, I create a designated space:

  • One area for clothing
  • One for toiletries
  • One for travel essentials

Everything starts to live there so I can see what I’m bringing—and more importantly, what I don’t need.

The Mindset Shift

Days 9–8 are about trusting your plan.

You’ve done the research. You’ve booked the big things. Now it’s about refining, editing, and making sure everything you bring serves a purpose.

No chaos packing.
No “just in case” outfits.
No overloading the itinerary.

Just a really well-edited trip.

And honestly? That’s where the luxury feeling comes from—not more stuff, but less… done better.
